On December 8th, 2024, the Maldives welcomed the Italian-flagged cruise ship AIDA, carrying 2,139 tourists from Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Arriving from Muscat, Oman, this marks the first cruise ship visit to the country since regulatory changes requested by the Maldives Association of Yacht Agents (MAYA).
The arrival of AIDA is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, benefiting businesses across the nation. Restaurants, souvenir shops, local dhonis, guesthouses, and retail outlets in Malé and Hulhumalé stand to gain from the influx of visitors. This surge in tourism will further solidify the Maldives’ status as a premier cruise destination in the region.
The visit also highlights the Maldives' ongoing efforts to diversify its tourism offerings and support economic growth. Beyond boosting the local economy, the influx of tourists is anticipated to enhance foreign reserves. AIDA is scheduled to depart on December 9th, 2024, marking a brief but impactful stop in the country.
This milestone comes after the Maldives’ recent recognition as the World’s Leading Destination for the fifth consecutive year and its first win as the World’s Leading Green Destination. The cruise sector’s expansion signals a bright future for the tourism industry.
