Velana International Airport set a new record for air traffic movement in a single day on Sunday, January 2, 2022, with 826 movements.
The Maldives Airports Company (MACL) reported that there were 233 runway movements and 593 seaplane movements, totaling 826, a new record. The previous record was 811 movements on January 5, 2020, before aviation traffic slowed and eventually came to a halt in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Arrivals have been at an all-time high throughout this peak season and New Year’s, resulting in airport air traffic congestion.
